The true story of the Trojan War

I just saw Troy (the movie, ofcourse!) - yeah, I'm a bit slow at movies - and I must say, that even though the movie was very entertaining, the story was extremely qestionable.

It all happened when I hopped on to the internet to read the REAL story of troy, just to verify the authenticity of the movie's story. What I found were fragments of the history of the war between Troy and Sparta scattered about, but never in a compiled format. So I chose to compile the history of the Trojan war, to fill in the gaps in history. First, let me start by saying that the Trojan war did not happen for sure - there is a possibility that it did, but archeologists aren't sure. Second, there is no record of an Achilles, or a Helen of Troy (although high school history books insist there were!).

The closest account of the war that we have (closest as in closest to the war) is the 'Iliad' by the blind Greek poet Homer, written around 800BC. Click here to view a page from his accounts. Homer places the site of the war by the side of the ardanelles, which would be besides the strait along the Dead Sea. As such, this is strategically a very important location for trade. The war supposedly took place around 1250BC. At the site indicated on the map, several digs have unearthed several cities, built atop one another. The oldest city was dated back to approximately 4500BC.

Some of these cities show signs of a violent end, while others show none. One particular city, dated at about 1200BC, matches Homer's description the closest. Archeologists have found bones, piles of stones for slingshots and evidence of burning, which are implications of a city's sack. Archeologists have also found writings that indicate a war. According to a BBC documentary:

... However, when fragments of Hittite writings from this era were unearthed, they offered some tantalising clues. They spoke of a dispute in the West at this time, and described a city whose name was similar to Ilion - a later name given to Troy.

If Homer's accounts are true, then there were indeed a Helen of Troy, and an Achilles, but the documents retrieved show no such evidence. No evidence of a Queen Helen of Sparta running away with Prince Paris of Troy. Prince Paris (also known as Prince Alexandros) and Prince Hector, however, are believed to be real people instead of just poetic characters. But the war is most unlikely to have happened over Paris' desire for Helen. The most probable reason for the war is the strategic position of troy, and the desire of acquisition of power and wealth - not love.

There is also no evidence for the existence of a wooden horse, as described by Homer (or our high school history books for that matter!) in any of the excavated cities.

Archeologists do not confirm the 10-year war described by Homer, but they believe that there were a series of wars between the Trojans and the Greeks, which were indeed the end of Troy (archeologically known as the Hittite Empire).

The new Mac Mini

Hey, you! Reading this blog! Yeah, you probably know about Apples' new Mac Mini. Now despite the marketing route that Apple had chosen to project this as a switcher-product, the Mac mini is soo much more. After all, it has got the most wonderful reviews from even the worst of Apple-bashers!

Now lets consider the other things this product can achieve, other than convert the Wintel faithful.

Obviously, the Mac mini is the smallest computer out there (and oh! so stylish!!) It is probably the first 'Media Center' computer out there. Ofcourse Microsoft started it, but have you seen any of the Media Center PC's? They all suck! Even the concept Media Center PC's suck! The mini, however, is the first computer you'd ever wanna hook up to your 42" Plasma (or place it anywhere in your living room for that matter)! This is where the media center realm begins! The sheer elegance, size and quietness of the machine wins it the award!

The mini can also be used as a Media server for the rest of your PC's/Mac's. Despite Steve Jobs' lack of attribution to it, the mini can perform wirelessly with Airport and/or Bluetooth thru an on-board extension available thru Apple.

The mini is so small - and being a G4, very cool and not power-hungry - that you could use it as an entertainment center in your car or GMC Truck! You can even tow along the same machine from living room to the truck and back! Its THAT portable!

So, even though Apple is aiming this produt at switchers (who most probably will switch now as they have no more excuses left!), this is a product for media-holics! Parents, grandparents, teenagers who want to organize their music and photos, make movies and stuff, and then show it off to people (or just keep them for memory's sake!) should really take a look at this really really low-cost, stylish machine from Apple!

EDIT: Wow! Im getting pretty good at Apple-analysis, check this out, it appeared on the web a day after my blog!

Feelin' Blue

Tonight, I realized that there's a part of your life you didn't know existed - it drives you crazy. I mean sometimes you don't realize that you care for something, until you do.

I got up from bed - clearly this wasnt gonna be a sleeping night! I made a cup of black coffee - stronger than usual. I kept adding coffee until I felt the table vibrate from the effervescence. I was hoping it would clear my mind, but the caffine now has me thinking deeply. No, I dont wanna know the meaning of life, I dont wanna know why we're here, I dont wanna ask myself these questions! I just wish I could stop thinking, you know. Im seeing everything clearly now - maybe too clearly for comfort, It doesnt let me sleep,It doesnt let me relax. All the while, only one thought's on my mind:

Sometimes you don't realize that you care for something,
until you do.

Past And Present

The past is always a conglomerate of truth, and recollection - reality is subjective, and memory is shaped by both prior and subsequent experience, therefore two witnesses of the same incident may feel differently about the events that took place. Sometimes we distort our memory to suit our need, sometimes even without realizing it. Therefore the best way to recall an event is to see it from many perspectives.

For this reason, I set up a website for old friends to share memories with each other:
